HDMI: The Connection Most Buyers Should Expect
HDMI carries digital video and audio and is widely used by computers, media players, conferencing systems, cable/satellite boxes and AV switchers. For most commercial installations, having at least one suitable HDMI input is a baseline requirement.
But an HDMI port alone does not tell you everything. Confirm the display supports the resolution, refresh rate and HDCP version required by the source. For a 4K system, check that the exact input supports the desired 4K signal rather than assuming every HDMI port is identical.
DisplayPort: Still Important in Professional AV
DisplayPort remains useful when the source is a workstation, desktop PC or professional AV device. Some commercial displays also use DisplayPort as part of a signal-loop or daisy-chain architecture, although this is model-specific.
USB-C Can Simplify a Room—But Check What the Port Actually Does
USB-C is attractive because a compatible implementation can reduce adapters and cables. Depending on the display, a USB-C connection may support video through DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB data, touch return, Ethernet and/or USB Power Delivery for a laptop.
Those features are not automatic. A USB-C-shaped port may provide only a subset of them. Check the product specification for video input capability and the exact charging wattage if you expect the display to power a notebook.
Wi-Fi and Wireless Screen Sharing Are Not the Same Thing
A commercial display can include Wi-Fi without automatically supporting every form of wireless presentation. Wi-Fi is simply the network connection. What the display can do over that connection depends on its operating system, software and supported protocols.

LAN and RS-232 Do Different Jobs

RS-232 is a dedicated serial-control connection commonly used for dependable commands such as power, input selection, volume and status. It remains valuable in integrated corporate, education and command/control AV systems.
RJ45 Does Not Automatically Mean “Video Over Ethernet”
This is one of the most common connectivity misunderstandings. A network port on a commercial display can be intended for management, built-in webOS/Tizen/signage features or control. It does not automatically mean you can plug a network cable into the display and send any HDMI source across the LAN.
What If DVI or VGA Is Already Running Through the Wall?
Many replacement projects involve older NEC, Sharp, LG or other commercial displays connected through cabling that was installed years ago. Before replacing the display, identify the existing connector at both ends, source resolution and whether the old system carries analog or digital video.
